People who help us - Fire fighter week

This week on our 'People who help us' project we are learning all about The Fire Brigade.

The Green Watch from Kettering Fire Station were kind enough to come to the nursery for the children to see and sit in the fire engine, use the hose and talk to the firemen.

Library display

Your children have been working hard to create beautiful weavings, finger swirls, roller ball, toothbrush, sand paint, bubble and salad spinning paintings to display at Kettering Library. We are very proud of the work the children have created and delighted that the library contacted us to display the childrens work. If you are in town and near the library please call in and have a look.

Make the most of the wonderful snow

What is wrong with everyone? I cannot believe how many people I have heard complaining about the snow. Even the newsreaders commented they hoped for better weather soon (in my eyes you couldn't get better weather. People pay money to go on skiing holidays and here we've got the snow on our doorstep).

In a time in which we are constantly reminded of the worries of global warming, why are we moaning about the snow in winter (winter its meant to be cold)? Have we all become so work orientated that a couple of days of fun in the snow in unheard of? We may never see this again in our lifetime so why not enjoy it?

I work at a nursery school and for those of us who could walk in we have had a magical time. The children and the staff have made memories they will no doubt remember for a lifetime. Are a couple of days out of the normal routine so bad? Is it so awful if people stay at home and heaven forbid, have some fun?

In the past few days I have seen qualities that I have only heard my grandparents talk about - people helping one another, pushing cars, digging others out, families all out together for the whole day and just generally talking to passers by) I have actually spoken to my neighbours for the first time since moving here). Should we not be teaching our children about these things rather than wishing them away with the snow?

How often does a whole family spend a day together, let alone outside? And as for community spirit, it should be encouraged. We need to get back to the days when people helped one another. I say ban the cars, as they only ruin the magic of the beautiful landscapes covered in flawless white snow, and embrace your inner child. Get out the thermals and just enjoy - you only live once!

Fun in the snow

The and children and staff had fun in the snow today building their very own Queen of Hearts Snowman.

A FOUR-DAY party was organised to give more than 200 older people a New Year dinner.

Northamptonshire county councillor Bill Parker, who represents the Brambleside ward, first arranged the event three years ago and 26 people aged 60 and over went along. The event has grown in popularity, with 100 attending last year. This year, 204 people were catered for at the Beeswing pub in Rockingham Road on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and today. Cllr Parker, who is allocated £10,000 every year to spend on community projects, spent £1,700 from this year’s pot to give people a chance to get together. He said:

“One of the problems in the north of Kettering is that there are no facilities for people of all ages and I’m particularly conscious that there is nothing for the older generation. “We started advertising in our newsletter and invited children from the Queen of Hearts Nursery to sing at the event. “It’s a nice way for some of the older residents to get together and talk to people they might not have seen in a while.”

Cllr Parker, who is also chairman of Brambleside Community Association, is helping with plans to get a community centre built close to the school. It is hoped it will include kitchen facilities so children at Brambleside Community Primary School can be provided with a hot lunch. The project, expected to cost between £1m and £2m, has also received £5,000 from Cllr Parker’s funds to help pay for architects and the planning application. It is hoped the community centre can be built between the school and the shops to provide a home for community groups. Cllr Parker is meeting Kettering Council officers next month to discuss further funding. He said:

“The school was built 12 years ago and the land nearby was earmarked for a community centre so this has been a long time coming.”

Cllr Parker has also used some of his money to start a community newsletter.

Bride-to-be in contest final

A Desborough bride could be set for a change of luck after being chosen as a finalist in a national competition, with a chance of winning £3,000 towards her dream wedding.
Hayley Mullan, 27, Desborough, applied for the competition after seeing it in magazine Wedding Ideas, and was selected as one of the 10 finalists after telling the judges about her string of bad luck in preparing for her big day.She said: "I wrote to the magazine and told them I was unable to exercise to help me lose weight in the run-up to the wedding."I didn't hear anything so didn't think I had got through but then I got a phone call saying I was one of the 10 finalists."Miss Mullen decided to enter the competition after she tripped outside her home in March and sprained both her ankles.The accident has left her unable to exercise to lose weight for her big day with fiance Rob Desborough in June.She said: "I was just getting ready to go on holiday and went outside to check my sat nav and went over on my ankle."I missed my holiday, which had been planned for my birthday, and had to spend it at home."Miss Mullan met Rob, 35, through speed dating and he proposed last year on Christmas Day in front of her family.She said: "It was so nice because all my family were there and we were all in tears."If I win I am planning to put the money towards the tiaras and a few other things."It would be great to win the competition."The competition, run with weight loss tablets Lipobind, will now be decided by a public vote on the website.The winning bride will receive £3,000 worth of wedding vouchers and their wedding day photos will be featured in the magazine.
